Is My Story Worth Writing?

The universal question all writers encounter. It doesn’t matter if it’s your first attempt at a story or if you are a seasoned writer. It doesn’t matter if you’re starting out or deep into revisions. At some point, all of us grapple with the question:

Should I even write this story?

Is it interesting/unique/funny/deep/relevant/entertaining enough that others will want to read it?

And will I be a capable enough to write it?

The short answer is yes, of course it is. Just by asking the question, it shows you are a lover of story, and will do it justice. And if you find the idea interesting, I can guarantee you others will too.

The world needs your story. No one will tell it the way you tell it.

Your voice, your perspective, and your life experience are the things that make this story uniquely yours.

But I’m also well aware that some motivational speech about why you should write does not undo the demons trying to talk you out of it. So here is a practical litmus test to help you decide for yourself.

Answer these statements with a simple true or false.

  1. I think my story idea is interesting.

  2. Though similar stories may have been written, I bring my own unique voice and point of view to it.

  3. I will put in the time to make this story the best it can be.

  4. I will work with others to help my story become a quality book for readers.

  5. I don’t have all the answers now and I don’t need to. The story will grow as I grow as a writer.

If you answered true to any of these statements, then you have your answer.

WRITE THE STORY.

Imposter syndrome is normal. We all experience it in our writing, myself included. All I can say is I’m so glad I pushed through, and after four books I know for a fact they were worth writing.

So pick up the pen, or crack open your computer, and get some words down.

And if you answered false to all of those questions, maybe spend some time digging into why. What is coming up? Something under the surface may be a bigger barrier affecting your writing. It’s worth exploring. You deserve to write with a clear mind and open heart.

Keep going. You have a story worth writing.
